Velvet
Apart from the addition of a Parisian-style lounge bar a few years ago, Velvet hasn't changed much over its 12 years as a Village institution. It still has its infamous goldfish bowl set into the stairs, mostly inoperational TVs in the toilets and slightly offbeat décor – but its formula is still a winning one. Drink upstairs, food downstairs with decent staff attending to both. Whether you want after-work dining 'n' drinking, a place to eat with friends, or a romantic rendezvous, Velvet does the job. Look out for the alarmingly well-endowed African statue.
