Tikka Chance on Me!

Research reveals that curry cures a sore head better than aspirin - something in the spices, apparently. So we searched out Glasgow's five top curry houses...

The city's hottest curry:

Dhabba
44 Candleriggs
(0141) 553 1249
You're crying more than an overweight girl wathing the movie Beaches; your nose is running like the same girl towards a free bag of pakora; you feel like your behind is about to give birth to... yes, the same overweight girl. What the hell's happened? You've just had a Madras curry at North Indian restaurant Dhabba, that's what, and the only word you can remember is 'water'. If your idea of spicy is adding the 'Bombay Bad Boy' sachet to your Pot Noodle then steer well clear. If you like things hotter than magma though, then yabba-Dhabba-do it.
Open: Mon–Sat, 12pm–2pm & 5pm–12am; Sun, 5pm-–12am
Recommended dish: Chicken Madras, £10.95

Late-night opening:

Modern India
51 West Regent Street
(0141) 331 1980
Modern India sounds more like a Bangalore version of IKEA than a wee restaurant, but luckily the food in here tastes nothing like furniture - unless you happen to have a chicken korma couch. Perfect for anyone who 'forgot' to have any dinner before hitting the pub, it's open 'til 1am on Friday and Saturday. The all-you-can-eat buffet also means you're mercifully spared the trouble of having to read the menu; instead, you just pays your money and fills your plate at this Delhi-catessen.
Open: Mon–Thu, 12pm–11.30pm; Fri–Sat, 12pm–1am; Sun, 4pm–11.30pm
Recommended dish: All-you-can-eat buffet, £5.95
House wine: £13

Best value for money:

Kama Sutra
331 Sauchiehall Street
(0141) 332 0055
Who wants to see paintings of men and women tying themselves in sexual knots over their tandoori chicken? Well, if that's your thing then Kama Sutra will Kama suit-ya. Excellent service, even on busy evenings, and prices are superb, especially considering that the food is amazing - and none more so than on the various buffet menus available through the day and night, which let you try a bit of all sorts. All together now: Kama korma Kama korma Kama chameleon...
Open: Mon-Sat, 12pm-12am; Sun, 5pm-12am
Recommended dish: Lunchtime 'Quickie' buffet (arf arf), £5.95; Sunday brunch buffet, £7.95; Evening buffet, £14.95;
Pre-theatre 3-course menu, £9.95 House wine: £11.95

Best modern curry:

Dakhin
First floor, 89 Candleriggs
(0141) 553 2585
One of the many cool aspects of Dakhin is that it doesn't look like a cross between your granny's living room and a brothel. It's all shiny and new, and not a painting of an unhappy tiger in sight. Brought to you by the same folks who own Dhabba, this restaurant offers South Indian cuisine and the staff will happily answer any questions you have if you can drag yourself away from stuffing your face long enough. It's also just expensive enough that you won't be surrounded by 16 drunken lads who think it's funny to fill their mate's shoes with spiced onions.
Open: Mon–Thu, 12pm–2pm & 5pm–10.30pm; Fri, 12pm–2pm & 5pm–11pm; Sat–Sun, 1pm–11pm

BYOB fave:

Mother India
28 Westminster Terrance
(0141) 221 1663
There's nought better than getting tipsy at carry-out prices while eating a good Ruby Murray, except perhaps winning the lottery and buying your own brewery-cum-balti house, where vats of beer and bhuna are fed to you by scantily-clad, dusky... ahem, anyway. The nice people at Mother India let you bring in as much booze as you like, so there's no more hiding tepid Buckfast/White Lightning/Tennent's lager under the table and topping up your glass when the waiter's not looking. Speedy service means you're not left looking jealously at the neighbouring table's leftovers; you'll have your main course before you've even coated half the linen with your starter. Brilliant.
Open: Mon–Sun, 12pm–12am
Recommended dish: King prawn Karahi, £14.50
HOUSE WINE: BYOB
