Sex, Drugs and Arturo

Preview

The Manchester Photographic Gallery adopts the well-tested formula for a successful venue in any post-industrial city. Take one disused warehouse, fill all the holes with massive plains of glass, clean stripped down floorboards and modern fittings. In this case add loads of stunning photos from the best artists up and down the land et voila! You have yourself an awesome little gallery.

This month the only independent photography gallery outside of London will house Will Wilkinson's northern debut of Sex, Drugs and Arturo. Wilkinson's two-year collaboration with eccentric artist Arturo in the mountains of Mallorca has produced some of the most beautiful and intriguing portraits. Arturo's weathered face tells the story of an astonishing life, spent in the most fascinating corners of the globe.

The collection sits alongside Wilkinson's portraits of some of our best-loved musicians, such as Pete Doherty (ahem) and Paul Weller. Downstairs you'll find the Gallery's own collection of everything Manchester - think everything from Ricky Hatton to the city's favourite landmarks.

It's all free and just two minutes from town so no excuses not to get yourself down there. Plus if you really like one of the pieces (and have a grand or two knocking about) they are available to buy.
