Radisson Edwardian Hotel Manchester
Despite appearances to the contrary, Itchy are not the classiest of travellers. We're more used to sleeping in bunks above smelly French men than in king size beds under duvets bigger than our garden. While we usually skip our breakfast of a dry crust of bread and watery black coffee, we can make an effort for a breakfast buffet that has everything from fresh watermelon to smoked salmon. And you know what? It's certainly something we could get used to.
The Radisson Edwardian Manchester is central enough to find without looking embarrassingly like a tourist but set off the main shopping streets and therefore away from the rustling of Primark bags during the daytime and screams of mini-skirted teens at night. We even managed to find a bus that let us off right outside the doors, although we have little shame, so you may prefer to splash out on a taxi.
The hotel is stunning. Although relatively new (having opened in 2004) the Free Trade Hall in which it is housed has been there since the dawn of time (1843) and has been the venue for performances by everyone from Charles Dickens to the Sex Pistols. Our kick ass penthouse suite was named Dylan, we were told, ”because Bob Dylan performed in the hotel... well, not actually in the hotel, but in the building“. Fine by us.
To be honest we wouldn't have cared if the suite had been named Bin Laden, the view over Manchester was breathtaking and all the facilities of the highest possible quality, from Bang and Olufsen TVs to Molton Brown toiletries. In fact the Radisson Edwardian Manchester impressed us most with their attention to detail. A personalised welcome message in a greetings card here, a beautifully packaged fruit plate there, and a friendly doorman to greet you until the early hours of the morning? Things that you would never guess you wanted but, when you discover them, make your day.
Of course beneath the frills the bare bones of hospitality were all present and correct. Clean as a whistle from head to toe, with a bed so comfortable we could have been wrapped up in a cloud and more breakfast options than we could have put on a wish list in our fuzzyheaded morning contentment. We reluctantly dragged ourselves out thinking we would never feel hungry again, and looked back longingly as the doorman smiled and closed the door for us.
