August events in Manchester
Diversity extraordinaire
August. The last true month of summer. How will you spend yours?
Afrika! Afrika!
Over a hundred artists, dancers, singers and musicians from all over Africa display incredible acrobatic routines and extraordinary energy. Itchy has no doubt this is an impressive event, but it isn't half complicated to access. You've got to show up an hour and a quarter before kick-off; prices range hugely depending on who you are and what day it is; and the whole shebang takes place in the Trafford Centre's 'Tented Palaces' – whatever they may be. So do some research beforehand. It'll be worth it.

Manchester Mega Photo
Quite literally, a massive photo of Manchester city centre. Well, a collage of lots of smaller ones, actually, taken by local photographer Aidan O'Rourke in 2006 from the top of the Beetham Tower before its completion. Unless you're a very determined burglar, that's a view you'll never see again, as it's now a swanky apartment. The resulting panorama is 10 feet high and 27 wide, featuring 285 overlapping prints. Really quite stunning.

Deodorant Type: Sculptures by Gwon Osang
Don't be put off by the title. This is not an exhibition of oversized deodorant cans; or smelly people. Gwon Osang's work provides a sort-of alternative to Madame Tussauds. He creates life-size sculptures of people – but with immense photo-realism and surreal aspects. Two new major works created especially for Manchester are 'Snodgrass'; a 780g model of a working horse copper; and 'Yamaha': a likeness of 808 State's Graham Massey. Why not go for the more obvious Mick Hucknall or Ian Brown? We don't know. But we're quite relieved all the same.
